Okay, so FOURTH trip to the DMV for the third road test. I have NOTHING good to say and even wrote a nasty letter to the DMV because the officer who took him praised all of his driving and told me that he did great.
BUT...
On their way back to the DMV, after the three-point-turn, he told Nick to stop and drive in reverse up the block!!!
????
He made him drive something like over a hundred feet in reverse. They did not do that the other two times and so he swerved in to the middle of this ONE LANE EMPTY ROAD and he failed him.
Seriously, it is a good thing that I do not have a license to carry a weapon!

OH MY HECK!!!! That is absolutely ridiculous! I've never heard of such a thing. I'm glad you wrote to the DMV. You probably won't hear anything about it, but at least you get the satisfaction of letting someone know about the stupidity.
OMG! seriously, WTF is the matter with that department! this is getting a little ridunkulous! i would be so past the stage of angry. driving backwards?! why the hell would you have to drive backwards?! you've got way more patience than i do, that's for sure. when's he get to try again, i'll be sending some mojo his way.
What the world is going on here?? They had him drive BACKWARDS???? It really sounds like someone at that DMV has it in for teen drivers.
If driving in reverse is required to get a drivers license, I'd better start working on this with my teen son.
This kind of reminds me of a situation when I was a teen. There was a kid in town who kept taking his test, at the same close-to-our-town DMV, and flunking. So, his parents, fed up with the whole thing, drove him to the farther-away-from-our-Small-Town DMV and he was finally able to get his license. Maybe you should think about doing that with your son. Just a thought!
Anyway, I am sending you all kinds of "deep breaths, calm thoughts.." hope it helps! :)
OMG! That's ridiculous! Who can back up totally straight for that distance? I've been driving for over 30 years and have never been able to do that and I certainly don't recall having to do it on a road test.
This pretty much proves my theory that those DMV testers get their rocks off by failing people. They are on a huge power trip.
I'm with A. Marie, I would take him to a different DMV location.
Stacey - I can't believe what Nick is being put through! Is this the Louisburg DMV? Amanda will be going in a few weeks for her license.... I'll be taking her to Raleigh, thank you very much. My older 3 never had anything like this! I don't think they even had to do a 3-point-turn for their test! They drove up Capital Blvd about a 1/4 mile, turned around, drove back, drove into the parking lot and parked the car. No driving backwards!!!!!
Yes, it's the Louisburg location. We might go to Raleigh next or perhaps Oxford!!
wow, the kid drives like me! and yes, I've thought for a long time that it's a good thing you don't have a license to carry a weapon. :o)
oh no, that is crazy. it is just out of this world.
