Bad Cholesterol

So in all of my fun and frolic last week with feeling bad, it turns out that on TOP of everything else, I have bad cholesterol. Oh, not all bad. My good levels are good but the bad levels are...bad. When the doctor called me with the results she's like "You need to be on a low-fat, low-cholesterol diet". That translates to "low-taste, low-yumminess diet."

I cook with butter. I LOVE butter. I know that I can use LESS of it, but...it's just not as yummy. I'm a food snob in case you haven't noticed. So I started cruising the internet for a menu plan and you know what you find? "Foods to help lower your cholesterol" but no real menus. I need a menu. I do better if it is laid out for me a little bit otherwise it is all up to interpretation and that never ends well. I mean for instance - dark chocolate is good for you! Okay, but eating 12 pieces of it a day is NOT good for you. But do they tell you that? No. So with these cholesterol lowering foods, how much? In what combination? How many times a day? Why can't I eat ice cream, exactly? Or maybe, how much ice cream is okay BEFORE your cholesterol goes through the roof?

I NEED ANSWERS!!! I am so stupid when it comes to these things! So I will go and I will search. And search. And search some more. I'm already on this darn computer writing like a fiend. I might as well take hand-cramp breaks and search for a diet that is idiot-proof for me.

Wish me luck! I'm baking cakes right now and I don't give a damn about the cholesterol involved!!

Hi Stace. When you find them I could use some also.I love ice cream. Also everything else I am not suppose to have.

I used to work in the dietary department at the hospital, and the low-fat, low-cholesterol diets were some of the most challenging to work with. If I can find some good recipes, I'll post them for you! :)

if your curious...you can lower it by taking apple cider vinegar....make sure you dilute it though....2 TABLESPOONS in glass of water twice a day.

My suggestion, as someone who was diagnosed a year ago with high cholesterol, is to use your normal menu plan and substitute ingredients with things like whole wheat pasta, brown rice, more fruits and veggies and less breads. I also substitute sherbet for ice cream when I'm at home and my entire family enjoys Dannon Light & Fit yogurt and we like to add fresh berries to it. I also had granola for a fruit parfait. Eating instant "low sugar" oatmeal has really helped me, although, I have to admit, I do need a good bowl of Frosted Flakes once in a while!
I also cook more from scratch now, avoiding processed spaghetti sauces, etc. That allows me to control the amount of sugars and fats in my meals.
Good luck!

I don't know much about cholesterol :( That would be hard.

You were one of my top 10 entrecard droppers for the month of October, thanks! I posted a thank you link at my blog tonight.

Well I'm totally the wrong person to give advice on diet.... but in my experience the rule of thumb to go by is... if it tastes good... you can't eat it.

uhhhh. I see a big old blog spin spin off. on going project at the least. If you turn it into a project/blog project, than it isn't as bad right? Just an experiment. Just research for a story.....think of it that way.....just research.

My hubby has to be on a low cholesterol diet, and I second what Lynne said - substitute! You can make a lot of yummy foods a lot better by using I Can't Believe it's Not Butter STICKS (or the spray for veggies or popcorn), use Egg Beaters in place of eggs in baking (you can't even tell), use applesauce for some of the oil in baking, eat brown rice instead of white, eat wholegrain bread instead of white, eat slow churned style ice cream instead of regular - the list goes on - it's not as bad as you think! Good luck! :-)
