Things I Miss From My Childhood...

I really don't know why kids think that growing up is so great. Sure there have been perks, but for the most part, I find myself longing for the things, the feelings, the places of my childhood.

I miss my Lazy Dazy doll. She was old and I was forced to give her up. I found one on E-bay and bought her but it wasn't the same.

I miss sitting on the porch swing and holding hands with my grandpa. He was the BEST. I wish my kids could have experienced even one day with him.

I miss the innocence of running around the neighborhood with my friends, riding bikes, playing ball in the field...all without adult supervision. My kids have never lived in a time where that was possible.

I miss big family get-togethers. When I was growing up, my dad's family was always around. They had a cousin's club that got together often. I don't know where most of my cousin's even live and I've never met any of their children.

I miss cooking with my Nana. Again from my dad's side of the family, we used to be at her house with my aunts and uncles and we'd make homemade pasta and it was amazing!!

I miss my Cabbage Patch doll. She's being held hostage and against her will in my ex-stepfather's attic and he won't give her back!

I miss Bugs Bunny cartoons. You know, the good ones.

I miss hearing the ice cream man - Mister Softee - and running to get a Mickey Mouse cone or a chocolate milkshake.

I miss swimming in the pool at night.

I guess what I miss most of all is the naivete
that went with being a child. You didn't know that people couldn't be trusted or that those who you love would never really love you back. I remember thinking that we were all equals and that we would always be happy. It didn't take long for that bubble to burst.

I long for the days when life was simple, relationships were simple and you were safe and secure in the knowledge that you were loved.

Great post!

It sounds weird, but I miss watching my Mom cook and do the housework. It was "our" time together.

I know what you mean Stace... when I was a lil girl I couldn't wait to be grown up... if I had only known...

that growing up isn't all it's cracked up to be...

maybe I would have just enjoyed the easiness of being a kid... cause when it's gone... it's gone... and you just can't get it back.

I miss being a kid... who knew those would be the best days of my life.... I sure didn't back then... and they sure didn't seem so great at the time...

Yeah, life was sure different long ago when we were kids. I remember walking home for lunch, watching TV, while my mom ironed. Just the innocence--I really miss that. Times are so different now for kids, aren't they?? Good post, Stacey--thanks for tapping the old memories.

I love this post! I still have my cabbage patch kid. I got her when I was in 6th grade, which makes her 26 years old. That's crazy! lol!

I miss my mom waking me up in the morning by blaring her elvis and abba cd's. I hated it at the time, and now I find myself doing the same thing to my kids, only it's keith urban, lady antebellum, and sugarland waking them up.

I'm with you. I just wrote a post on my second blog about childhood comfort foods. I also miss Bugs, the Flintstones, The Jetsons, creating drama for Barbie and Mister Softee ... hello. Let's not forget the Jack and Jill truck. I was an ice cream sandwich kid. I can go on and on. You're right, it was a safer and more simpler time. My mother made a fried chicken dinner every Sunday before I was in the womb (I'm the youngest of five) until a year before she died.

What a lovely, wistful post this is and I love the comments here as well.

Yes, there were some things about my childhood that just dripped with the honey of innocence and frolicked in the playground of freedom. But there were many terrifying and brutal moments too, actually, days and years, which just forced the innocence and freedom into tiny holes.

Letting them out continues to be my 'growing up'.

that last paragraph teared me up! Very true.

I saw on another blog that they found the hour episode of Rags to Riches. Do you remember that show?
